HOWLOWEEN Blog Hop: New Beginnings

Howloween Blog Hop Badge

Oct 30-Nov 1, 2014

When I set out to write my first Vampire Diaries novella for Amazon’s Kindle Worlds (thank you, Gossip Girl guru Carolyn Hughey for the inspiration), I had to decide which characters in the series I wanted to focus on. I noticed in reading other Kindle Worlds stories that Damon featured quite heavily in most of them, and admittedly, he is my favorite Vampire Diaries character as well (Who doesn’t love a bad boy, right?).

But I decided to go in a different direction. At the time I was brainstorming, Season 4 of the TV show was winding down to its finale, and it was clear Damon and Elena were finally going to get together. That left Stefan alone, and in my eyes, desperately in need of a new love interest. {Light bulb moment!}

A New Beginning

If anyone was in need of a new beginning it was Stefan Salvatore. Not only could the poor guy do with some good lovin’, but I would give him someone completely new to fall for–someone I crafted specifically for my novella PURSUED BY EVIL (and its sequel EVIL AFTER MIDNIGHT).

Creating this new character was definitely one of the most enjoyable parts of the whole project. And I chose to come up with a brand new type of supernatural that hadn’t featured on the show before. (Stefan didn’t need to be falling for another human now, did he?)

I thought it would be fun to give Stefan someone with her own set of secrets that he would need to unravel, and a set of supernatural abilities to rival his own. Elena Gilbert she was not.

Writing these novellas was also a new beginning for me as an author. I’d never tried to write paranormal romance before (with supernatural creatures, that is–time travel could be considered paranormal, but my Soul Mate series centers around humans.), and I’d never tried to write a novella either. In fact, I was convinced I wasn’t able to write “short.” Boy, was I wrong! 🙂

Not only did I prove to myself I could do write a paranormal romance (and keep it short!), but I also opened up a whole new world of  possibilities for my writing–culminating in the release of a new novella in my Soul Mates series last month, LOST WITHOUT YOU.

So, you never know what you can do until you try, and new beginnings can happen at any point in your life–whether you’re a fictional vampire or a writer.

  • Favorite Halloween memory, first time got to get dressed up an go trick or treating in town. Living on the farm, we didn’t always get to go out, so this was a big deal.

    • I can imagine that must have been very exciting. We live in a rural-ish area, too, and there can be a lot of walking between houses. It taught my son not to pick bulky costumes like the over-sized King Kong suit that is hard to walk in. 😀

    • Trick or treating are some of my best memories too. A whole bunch of us from the neighborhood would go and the challenge was always to see if we could farther through the neighboring development than last year, before we got too tired to walk any more. Nobody drove kids in cars back then. 😀

  • My favorite Halloween memory is my family ( the kids) going to the movies to watch a movie. As we walked back to our house, someone played a trick on us, acting like the killer character from the movie. Needless to say we ran home , never looking back.
